This is another lesson in "Don't throw away your old reference photos." It was on a rainy spring morning in 1988 that I ventured into this spill-over of the Thames River near Kent Bridge, Ontario equipped with my Dad's waders. I had a 28mm wide angle lens on my camera. I remember being up to my waist in the cold water, a light rain falling and sinking in the soft muddy bottom. Frankly I was more worried about my Nikon than the photograph.
The photographic results would lay in a shoe box for thirty years. The wide angle lens created some interesting effects. At the bottom of the scene we are looking almost straight down on the water yet at the top has we look across just below the horizon. I actually started the painting by painting the soft muddy bottom.
Here is my old 3 1/2 x 5 in. reference photograph. I'm not so sure it was the old faded photograph that was the inspiration. Perhaps it was more the memory of taking the photograph.
